During October 2005 Gravesend Lifeboat was called out to the fire on Southend Pier. They spent all night on scene and initially were tasked to search for fishermen reported as missing. Once the fishermen were found to be safe they then assisted with ferrying fire fighters to and from the fire. Sheerness All Weather Lifeboat and Southend Hovercraft also attended the fire.
